Overseeing CPEng is a key function of Engineering New Zealand, and Knowledge Assessments are a vital tool for confirming your skills and credentials. That’s why we’ve been working hard to improve the process.

One key improvement is that all applications for Knowledge Assessments will now be submitted through our online portal, which should significantly streamline the process. We’ve also added a new fast-track option for people who need a Knowledge Assessment for immigration purposes, as we realise this can often be a time-sensitive process.

These changes will allow assessments to be completed more efficiently and quickly, so take a moment to look through our guidance that explains the new process in detail. Our webinar provides an overview of the assessment process as well.

Recent CPD changes for current CPEng registrants

Continued Professional Development (CPD) is critical to ensuring ongoing competency, which is why we’re reminding all CPEng registrants that new Reassessment Guidelines are coming into effect from 2024.

Please make sure you’re familiar with our new Reassessment Guidelines and are tailoring your CPD according to the new guidance found on page 7 onwards.

As a Chartered Professional Engineer, you’re required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of CPD each year, with at least 15 hours of technical CPD required per practice field per year. We also need to see at least two hours each year of formal professional training covering topics such as ethics or cultural competency. If you're applying across more than one practice field, you'll need an additional 15 hours per year of CPD for each additional practice field, even if that means your total CPD required to achieve this is more than 40 hours per year.

Looking for ways to boost your CPD hours? We need more Assessors!

We’re also on the lookout for more Practice Area Assessors to join our team. This is a voluntary role that looks great on your CV and counts towards your CPD hours. As a Practice Area Assessor, you’ll work on three or more assessments each year and provide crucial technical expertise in the Chartered Assessment process. Each assessment takes approximately five hours to complete.

If you’re currently registered as a CPEng and have gone through at least one reassessment, register your interest in becoming a Practice Area Assessor by getting in touch with us – we would love to hear from you. We’re particularly interested in finding more Practice Area Assessor for assessments relating to structural engineering (low rise, medium rise and bridges), fire engineering, geotechnical engineering, building services and chemical engineering.
