The Chassis Code of Practice (CoP) is a practical resource for heavy vehicle engineers working with heavy vehicle chassis and related systems. It provides guidance on good engineering practice for the design, modification, repair, assessment and certification of chassis structures and associated components. By promoting a consistent approach to engineering and certification, the CoP helps support safe, durable and compliant heavy vehicles across New Zealand's transport sector.

What is the Chassis Code of Practice (CoP)?

The CoP covers a broad range of heavy vehicle systems and components, organised into several sections including chassis structure, suspension, and repair and specialist applications like tipper trucks and vehicle recovery service vehicles (heavy tow trucks).

Sections are published as they are produced and approved.

Who’s involved?

The CoP is a collaboration between:

Supporting consistent engineering practice

Whether undertaking a new design, integrating equipment, assessing a modification, repairing damage or supporting certification, the CoP provides a user-focused, practical framework for applying sound engineering principles and achieving consistent, technically robust outcomes.

Heavy vehicle chassis systems do not operate in isolation. Changes to one component or system can affect vehicle safety, structural performance, durability, handling, stability and regulatory compliance. The guidance focuses on the interactions between chassis-related systems, the engineering assessments required to support modifications and repairs, and the evidence needed to demonstrate that a vehicle remains fit for purpose throughout its service life.

The development process

Each CoP section is written by industry for industry. From technical writing and subject matter expert involvement to overarching technical review, heavy vehicle specialist certifiers are involved in every step of the process. This ensures the CoP guidelines incorporate a range of practices and views.

Can I submit feedback?

Your feedback is welcome and will be reviewed and considered by heavy vehicle engineers involved in creating the CoP. A new version of that section will be uploaded if changes are required.
