Election initiatives done and dusted
Last month we wrapped up two major election initiatives: a series of filmed conversations with political leaders and the Big Infrastructure Debate. Both reinforced the importance of a stable, well-planned infrastructure pipeline, while supercharging the profile of our profession on the national stage. You can watch recordings of the interviews and debate on our election page.
Engaging with Ministers
Since July, we've met with several Ministers on issues important to engineers and the wider profession. These included discussions with Hon Chris Penk, former Minister for Building and Construction, on proposed Building Act amendments; Hon Cameron Brewer, Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, on reform of New Zealand's standards system; and Hon Simon Watts, the new Building and Construction Minister, on priorities for improving the building system. Getting ready to work with the next Government
Thanks to members who joined our recent workshops to discuss issues we should put in front of the next Government after November's general election. Drawing on your feedback, we're preparing briefings on a range of priority topics for incoming Ministers. We're also looking at other ways to engage with the new Government early in its term and advocate for the interests of the profession.
Safety concerns over changes to the Wiring Rules
In August we escalated electrical engineers’ serious safety concerns about the Government’s decision to remove standards prohibiting the switching of protective earthing conductors and combined protective earth and neutral (PEN) conductors. Recent government decisions that impact you
The Emergency Management Act 2026 came into force on 3 September. The Act modernises New Zealand’s emergency management system by providing for clearer roles and responsibilities, more accountable and coordinated decision-making, and improved planning and management of natural hazard risks.
