Ian McCutcheon’s career evolved from electrical engineering into senior roles in public administration in local and central government.

Ian grew up in Wellington. He trained and qualified in electrical engineering through an apprenticeship with the New Zealand Railways from 1943 to 1948. He worked for New Zealand Railways until 1955.

Between 1955-1960, Ian worked as an electrical engineer overseeing maintenance of public transport vehicles for Wellington City Council. He then worked in senior engineering roles with the council’s Municipal Electricity Department (MED) from 1960-1966. He was General Manager of MED from 1967-1972. He then held the role of Wellington Town Clerk from 1972 until his retirement in 1984.

Ian held various government and local body appointments post-retirement, in the transport, electricity and local government sectors.
