Engineering academics play a critical role in the engineering profession. Engineering New Zealand has done some significant work to recognise this with the addition of the Academic practice field to the Membership pathway and the CPEng Register.

Engineering academics are now able to become a Chartered Member or Chartered Professional by going through the same first-time assessment process as any CPEng. Any academic admitted to this class of membership will be recognised as having demonstrated that they meet the minimum standard of a reasonable professional engineer and can practice competently in their affirmed practice area.
