Join the Engineering New Zealand South Canterbury Branch for an engaging presentation by Dominique Tharandt, Senior Project Manager at Apex Water, exploring how health and safety risk moves through the full lifecycle of an engineered system.
Drawing on more than 25 years of experience across engineering design, project delivery and operations, Dominique will share practical lessons on how decisions made at the design desk can influence construction, commissioning, maintenance and the people who ultimately operate our assets.
The session will look beyond compliance, standards and risk registers to ask some more human questions: Who could get hurt if we get this wrong? Who is actually carrying the risk created by our decisions? Did they have a voice in making those decisions? And are we genuinely reducing risk, or simply transferring it to someone else?
Through real-world examples, lessons learned, successes and a few uncomfortable moments, Dominique will explore what it means to genuinely design and engineer for safety.
The presentation will also consider how the same principles we use to understand and manage engineering risk can shape decisions in our personal lives - recognising that risk can rarely be eliminated entirely, but it can be better understood, reduced and consciously accepted.
A thought-provoking look at how health and safety risk travels from the design desk, through construction and commissioning and on to the people who ultimately operate and maintain what we engineer.
