This session explores how the operating characteristics of BESS: rapid charge/discharge cycling, bidirectional power flow, converter-generated harmonics, high utilisation and demanding availability requirements change the way transformers should be monitored and assessed.

The session will connect BESS operating data with transformer thermal, electrical and insulation condition, showing asset owners how monitoring can identify emerging risks, support condition-based maintenance, optimise transformer utilisation and reduce unexpected failures and costly downtime.

In addition to our Electrical Engineering Group members, we extend the invitation to all interested parties.

Key Learning Outcomes:
• Understand how BESS operating profiles differ from conventional transformer applications and why this matters for transformer condition.
• Identify the key transformer failure mechanisms and stresses associated with BESS operation.
• Determine which parameters should be monitored.

This presentation is available to attend both online and in person at Engineering New Zealand’s Wellington office.

Doors open at 5pm for drinks and nibbles, with the presentation starting at 5.30pm sharp.

Presenter Bio:
Dr. Bhaba P. Das is the Asia Pacific Regional Manager for Dynamic Ratings Australia, based in Wellington, New Zealand. A Senior Member of IEEE and Executive Editor of Transformers Magazine, he has extensive international experience in transformer condition monitoring, authored 40+ technical publications, holds three patents, and was named Transformers Magazine's Best Author in 2023 and 2025. He previously worked with Hitachi Energy and ETEL Transformers and is a graduate of the University of Canterbury.
