This webinar follows on from an earlier presentation at the World Conference of Timber Engineering, which spotlighted the timber from design through preconstruction and into construction, from the structural engineer's side.

It covers designing to what New Zealand suppliers can make, connection details worked through with the contractor and suppliers, the compliance pathway agreed for CLT in-plane action where no New Zealand CLT standard yet exists, protecting timber from moisture on site, and managing hydrogen embrittlement risk in engineered screws.

Museum Street Building, part of Parliament's Future Accommodation Strategy in Wellington, is a six-storey mass timber office building designed to Importance Level 4 on a site within a kilometre of the Wellington Fault. The brief asked for low-damage seismic performance, a 6-Star Green Star rating and open, flexible floor plates - a combination that would usually rule timber out.

The answer was supplementary damped base isolation. This involved double-pendulum isolators paired with viscous dampers, which bring the seismic demand on the superstructure down far enough for glulam braced frames, LVL Pres-Lam moment frames and CLT floor diaphragms to carry it.
