New Zealand Tunnelling Society St Barbara’s Day Celebration 2025
The New Zealand Tunnelling Society (NZTS) welcome NZTS members, future members, tunnellers, engineers, students, and enthusiasts to celebrate St Barbara’s Day and mark the end of 2025. Proudly sponsored by Delve Underground, the event brings together the wider tunnelling community for an evening of connection, recognition, and industry spirit.
About St Barbara’s Day
St Barbara is recognised as the patron saint of tunnellers, miners, and all who work with underground construction and explosives. Her day is a long-standing tradition within the global tunnelling sector, symbolising respect for the history of the craft and the risks faced by those who work underground.
For the tunnelling community, St Barbara’s Day is a time to:
- Honour the heritage and evolution of tunnelling and underground engineering.
- Reflect on safety and acknowledge the challenges inherent in working beneath the surface.
- Celebrate technical achievements and the people who contribute to advancing the industry.
- Strengthen the bond among professionals, students, and supporters of the field.
The NZTS 2025 Celebration
This year’s NZTS gathering provided a welcoming space for members and newcomers alike to connect and share in this tradition. Attendees have the opportunity to reflect on the year’s progress, recognise contributions across the sector, and enjoy the camaraderie that defines the NZTS community.
The event closes out 2025 with a strong sense of appreciation for the people who drive tunnelling forward in New Zealand, and with optimism for the year ahead.
