The session will provide insights into how KiwiRail is modernising the management of slopes, retaining walls, earthworks, river and coastal protection structures through the development of new inspection and design standards, advances in digital asset data collection, risk-based decision making, and a whole-of-life asset management approach.

Tom will share the challenges, innovations and future direction of ground engineering within one of New Zealand’s largest transport infrastructure networks.

Presenter Bio:
Tom Revell is KiwiRail’s Principal for Geotechnical Engineering. In his role, he provides technical leadership for retaining walls, slopes, earthworks, and geotechnical risk management across the national rail network. Tom has a background in large-scale infrastructure recovery and played key roles in the response and rebuild programmes following the Christchurch and Kaikōura earthquakes.

At KiwiRail, he works across both business-as-usual asset management workstreams and Rail Network Investment Programme (RNIP) projects, helping deliver geotechnical renewals, improvements, and the ongoing development of KiwiRail’s Ground Engineering Standards.
