The Quake centre is a dynamic partnership between the New Zealand Government, the University of Canterbury, and several leading industry groups, all working together to provide world-class knowledge, research and solutions to seismic issues.

This module is the third in a series of 3 designed to help you refresh and expand your engineering earthquake knowledge and skills that you learned attaining your degree or in the early part of your career.

The other two modules in this series are:

• Structural Dynamic Concepts for Seismic Design

In the structural engineering profession, standards regulate the minimum performance criteria for the design of structures in order to minimize the vulnerabilities of structures to earthquake, wind and gravity loads.

New Zealand standards provide minimum requirements for design; however, it is an engineers' responsibility to design structures above these minimums, which typically sets the bar for the vulnerability level of the structure. The decision for this is usually governed by client preferences and costs.

Learning outcomes

This module will help individuals become familiar with the loading and earthquake loading standards in New Zealand. It will also provide an understanding of:

• The New Zealand loading standards AS/NZS1170.0 and 1170.1
• The detailed requirements of NZS1170.5 Earthquake actions, including structural types, ductility factors, elastic site spectra, and the determination of the fundamental period of a structure
• Loading paths structural irregularities, analysis techniques, and the determination of horizontal deflections in line with the code.

Intended Audience

This module is aimed at structural, civil engineering and mechanical engineering students and practitioners wishing to develop a better understanding of the New Zealand loading Standards.
