A robust and well-developed specification prevents misunderstanding resulting in unwanted outcomes. This webinar introduces some essential best practice principles for developing and writing clear specifications that will properly communicate technical requirements.

All engineering work eventually culminates in the development of a specification that has to clearly communicate the technical requirements of the project.  The specification, together with the terms of contract and the project plan, enables successful engineering task execution.

Specifications are critical to clear communication of technical requirements to contractors. This communication is specific to the stage in the design cycle, type of requirement and the particular industry sector.  Delegates will be introduced to the elements of a “good” specification that is universally applicable.

This recorded webinar presents an overview of best practice specification development and writing principles so that specifiers can communicate technical requirements in a clear, unambiguous and structured manner.

Learning outcomes

In this recorded webinar you will gain:

  • an understanding specification types and a specification hierarchy in context with design documentation, conditions of contract and project documents.
  • an understanding of a best practice specification structure.
  • an awareness and understanding of requirements verification clauses
  • an awareness and understanding of substitutions and some other procedural chestnuts in specifications.
  • an awareness of proper unambiguous specification language.
  • an introduction to the main points needed for managing specification preparation.

Intended audience

This recorded webinar is aimed at all levels of experience – an introduction to beginners and as a guide for those who have not been exposed to some formal learning in regard to specifications.

This includes engineers, designers, consultants, contractors, principals (private and public sector), procurement officials, – anyone who has to develop, apply or interpret a specification as part of their work.

Presenter information

Piet Beukman has a passion for developing engineers into capable professional leaders that can deal with their technical, as well as their business tasks, with equal capability.

Piet retired in 2019 as the Director of the Engineering Management Programme at the University of Canterbury and is now self-employed as a coach, mentor, consultant and educator.  An accomplished “pracademic”, he has 43 years of experience in the aerospace, military, marine engineering, venture capital, commercialisation and consulting industries to offer. He also has hands-on experience of developing specifications for complex engineering projects.

He is influential in developing NZ best practice methods for the effective execution of engineering activities. He is highly regarded in New Zealand and internationally as a practitioner with a sound track record of achievement for using a practical, but rigorous, approach.

Piet has presented numerous webinars and short courses for local and international organisations including consulting firms, contractors, technology companies, district and city councils, electricity, infrastructure organisations and government departments.
