Mechanical services are one of the most common sources of noise complaints in buildings. Most of these problems are designed in, and they cost far less to avoid on the drawing board than to fix on site.

This session is presented by Marshall Day Acoustics, New Zealand’s largest specialist acoustics consultancy. It covers the basics of sound and the noise criteria used for different spaces. It then steps through the calculation process from equipment sound power to the noise level in the room.

Shaun and Malcolm will explain how to select quieter fans, fan coil units and air handling units. They also cover when to use attenuators or lined duct and how to avoid regenerated and breakout noise. The session closes with vibration isolation and the information your acoustic consultant needs from you.

Presenter Bios:
Shaun King is a Principal at Marshall Day Acoustics in Auckland with more than 18 years’ experience in building and environmental acoustics. His experience includes noise and vibration control for mechanical services across residential, healthcare, education and performing arts projects.

Malcolm Dunn is Managing Principal of Marshall Day Acoustics New Zealand. He joined the firm in 1997 and works across building, industrial and room acoustics, and vibration. His projects include the New Zealand International Convention Centre, Auckland Airport and Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.

Mechanical services cause more noise complaints than almost any other building system, and most of these problems can be resolved at the design stage. In this webinar, Shaun King and Malcolm Dunn of Marshall Day Acoustics show mechanical engineers how Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning noise is predicted, how to select quieter equipment and get acoustics right the first time.
