This 1.5-hour, in-person event begins with relaxed networking over drinks and nibbles, followed by a technical presentation exploring real-world flood protection projects and the systems used to protect buildings, infrastructure and communities from flooding.

As extreme rainfall events, overland flow risks, and flood exposure become increasingly important considerations in the design of new and existing developments, engineers are being asked to think beyond traditional drainage solutions and consider how buildings and sites can be actively protected when flooding cannot be completely avoided.

Led by Julian Lough, Flood Resilience Leader at Watersmart, this session will explore a range of flood protection case studies from New Zealand and overseas. We will look at the flood risks faced, the protection systems selected, how different technologies perform in practice, and the key design and operational considerations that influenced each solution.

The session will cover a range of approaches, with a focus on the practical lessons that can be applied to future projects.

Attendees will gain insight into:

  • How flood protection systems are being used to protect buildings, infrastructure, and communities.
  • The strengths and limitations of different flood protection technologies.
  • Selecting appropriate solutions based on flood depth, flow conditions, site constraints, access, and operational requirements.
  • The role of permanent, demountable, automatic, and temporary flood barriers.
  • Key engineering and design considerations when integrating flood protection into buildings and sites.
  • Practical lessons learned from real flood protection projects and case studies.
  • How flood protection can form part of a broader flood resilience and risk reduction strategy.

Note: These events are in-person in Auckland, New Zealand and often have a waitlist.
