Ryan Bosselmann's presentation will cover designing for pedestrian-induced vibration on the 52m Pūāhuru Bridge in Queenstown. Matthew Montgomery presents on constructability for the 25MDLND pier replacement, where the only access is through rail tunnels.

Refreshments from 5.30pm with presentations starting at 6pm sharply.

Designing for Vibration on Pūāhuru Bridge – Ryan Bosselman
Pūāhuru Bridge is a 52m long underdeck truss in Queenstown. The design of the bridge was heavily governed by aerodynamic effects and pedestrian harmonic vibration. This presentation will cover:

• Case studies to show what can happen when bridges are not designed for vibration.
• Empirical methods used to address vibration.

Bridge 25MDLND Pier Replacement - Designing for Constructability in access constrained locations – Matthew Montgomery
The midland line has various locations where the track diverges from the nearby rising infrastructure, the terrain causing the rail to be tunnelled through the mountainous region. So what happens when the only access to a bridge is via the rail and through the tunnels, and how does that effect the design case?
Matt will present the bridge 25MDLND pier replacement as a case study as a possible solution to these challenges.

Presenter Bios:
Ryan is a structural engineer within the civil structures team based in Beca Christchurch office. He has 3 years of experience in design, assessment, inspections, strengthening design, asset management and construction of civil structures. Types of civil structures he has worked on include wharves, steel truss bridges, post-tensionedconcrete box culverts and bridges, timber and concrete retaining structures, and other civil structures.

Matthew is a lead engineer of the Bridges team at Aurecon in Christchurch with 13 years of experience having worked across the United Kingdom and New Zealand, and is a Charted Member of Engineering New Zealand

Join the Bridge Engingeering Technical Society (BETS), Canterbury branch, for two short case-study talks on practical bridge design challenges. Talks will be followed by a relaxed Christmas debrief to close out the BETS year!
