Arahura River Bridge
The Arahura River Bridge, demolished in 2009, was a Howe truss, timber, single lane, combined road and rail bridge on State Highway 6, over the Arahura River (between Greymouth and Hokitika). The bridge was an important link in the West Coast’s transport network for around 110 years, and was a rare remaining New Zealand example of a large timber truss bridge.
Victoria Street Bridge, Cambridge
The connection of Cambridge to Leamington and Te Awamutu was an important link in the early roading system. The first bridge completed in 1871 was destroyed by a flood in 1875 and its replacement, a wooden truss girder bridge called the “Red Bridge” was showing signs of advanced deterioration when the Mayor, WF Buckland decided in 1899 a new high level bridge over the Waikato River was needed.
Ongaroto Bridge
At the time of its completion in 1905 the Ongaroto Bridge, across the Waikato River, was reputedly the longest single span timber bridge in the Southern Hemisphere. This bridge was demolished in the early 1930s.
Kopu Bridge
Until 2011 the Kopu Bridge was part of State Highway 25, spanning the Waihou River just south of Thames. Completed in 1928, it is significant as the sole remaining example of a swing span bridge in New Zealand. This type of bridge opens to let river traffic through, much like a gate.
Grafton Bridge
This bridge has a special pride of place in New Zealand but was designed and built by the Australian company, Ferro-Concrete Company of Australasia Limited. Upon its completion in 1910, Grafton Bridge was said to be the largest span reinforced concrete arch bridge in the world.
Hutt Estuary Bridge
The Hutt Estuary Bridge, completed in 1954, was New Zealand’s first substantial bridge with a prestressed concrete superstructure. At the time of its construction this road bridge was widely regarded as a significant New Zealand engineering project.
Shaky Suspension Bridge
Spanning the Manuherikia River at Alexandra, Shaky Suspension Bridge was constructed as a light traffic bridge, between 1878 and 1879, in response to local need and pressure. This attractive structure is a characteristic Central Otago suspension bridge with schist masonry towers and a timber deck.
Lower Shotover Bridge
A compound Pratt truss bridge, with tall concrete piers, the Lower Shotover Bridge was designed by eminent engineer, James Edward Fulton (1854–1928) in 1909. This bridge replaced a structure further down the Shotover River which had proven expensive for the Lake County Council to maintain because it was susceptible to the region’s frequent floods.
Victoria Bridge, Hamilton
Hamilton’s Victoria Bridge, also known as the Town Bridge, crosses the Waikato River and links central and east Hamilton. This steel plate girder deck arch bridge was completed in 1910.
Daniel O'Connell Bridge
Crossing the Manuherikia River west of Ophir, the Daniel O’Connell Bridge is a single lane road bridge providing access to that Central Otago town. Constructed between 1879 and 1880, this attractive structure is a characteristic example of Central Otago suspension bridge with schist masonry towers.
