Over his career as a civil engineer with the Dunedin City Council, Trevor Williams made a significant and lasting contribution to the modernisation and development of Dunedin’s engineering infrastructure.

Trevor was born and raised in Dunedin. He completed his engineering education at Canterbury University College, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) in 1953.

During his study, Trevor gained practical experience at the Hillside Railway Workshops and Dunedin City Council and officially joined Dunedin City Council as an Assistant Engineer in December 1952. He completed his engineering registration in 1956. In 1964, Trevor was appointed Design Engineer, Deputy City and Drainage Engineer in 1966 and City and Drainage Engineer in 1977.

Projects he was involved in and initiated, redeveloped and modernised many of Dunedin’s important utilities and public amenities, and included Moana Pool, Deep Stream Water Supply scheme, and the One-Way street system. After an early retirement from Dunedin City Council in 1987, Trevor was appointed as a senior lecturer in the Department of Surveying at the University of Otago.
