Graeme Shadwell had a long professional engineering career in the public service.

He took on high-level administration and project management roles for significant development projects in New Zealand; notably the Kapanui and Maui gas pipelines and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Graeme trained and qualified in civil engineering at Canterbury University College and then worked at the Ministry of Works (later the Ministry of Works and Development) from 1956 to 1988, specialising in roading, traffic engineering and gas pipeline projects at progressive levels of seniority. He was Commissioner of Works from 1985 to 1988, at which time the Ministry was disestablished.

Graeme was then Project Director of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa design and construction project from 1988 to 1998.

He was awarded the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1989.
