Civil engineer, Ron Carter, grew to become a leading figure in business and corporate governance.

Ron graduated with a Master’s degree in civil engineering from Auckland University College in 1958.

His first job was as a Junior Design Engineer with an engineering consultancy in Hamilton. He then returned to Auckland, joining Gray, Watts & Beca.

After some overseas experience with Ove Arup & Partners in London, Ron returned to New Zealand and went into partnership with Beca in 1965.

The company merged with Hollings and Ferner in 1968 to become Beca, Carter, Hollings & Ferner. Ron oversaw major infrastructure and industrial projects in New Zealand and set up Beca’s operations in Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia. Ron also served on several Boards, including as founding Chair of the Civil Aviation Authority (1992-1998); Air New Zealand; and the Electricity Commission.

He served as IPENZ president in 1999.

Ron was knighted in 1998, and awarded Order of New Zealand in 2014 for his contributions to regional and national infrastructure planning, governance, business and education.
