Maurice Davis was born in Dunedin, the son of a civil engineer.

He was schooled in Dunedin, Nelson and Napier, before studying civil engineering in Christchurch, graduating in 1955. Maurice’s career was focused around marine work, including harbour and port-facility design and construction in New Zealand, and port projects in South East Asia. He was also a qualified naval architect and an accredited Maritime New Zealand surveyor.

Maurice was Deputy Engineer at the Otago Harbour Board from 1961–1967 then Chief Engineer for the next 19 years. In this role he was primarily responsible for the construction of the Port Chalmers container terminal. Following this, Maurice was Managing Director at Duffill Watts and Davis in Dunedin until 2006. He was then a Marine and Coastal Engineer at CPG NZ, and following that, Marine and Coastal Engineer and Director at Emtech in Dunedin.

He was a former chair of Engineering New Zealand’s Otago Branch.
