In 1968, a group of Wellington women whose husbands were engineers in government departments started a group called the Femineers.

Originally, it provided an opportunity to get to know other women and their families through social events. After almost a decade, the group established a scholarship for a woman studying undergraduate engineering at the University of Canterbury to help increase the number of female engineers. The first scholarship, worth $300, was awarded in 1977. At its peak in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Femineers had around 150 members.
