David King was born in Cornwall, UK. At the age of sixteen, David began an apprenticeship with General Electric Company.

As it was war time, he spent time with the Fleet Air Arm and the Royal British Navy before returning to Birmingham to complete his apprenticeship. He gained qualifications in electrical and mechanical engineering. After completing his apprenticeship, David worked in Birmingham and London before making the decision in 1953, to emigrate to New Zealand.

David took up a position with the State Hydro Department in Southland. He then went on to work for the Buller Electric Power Board, during which time he oversaw the installation of a power line to Karamea. Later David worked for the Rangiora Borough Council and Ministry of Works.

David was a founding member of the New Zealand Clean Air Society and passionately promoted the importance of insulation in homes.
