Dave McLaren was born in Dunedin. After finishing high school, he found a job at the Ministry of Works as a draftsman.

He worked for the Ministry from 1954 to 1958, doing drafting work for projects including the Haast highway and Dunedin’s northern motorway.

Dave then studied by correspondence for an engineering qualification through the Institute of Structural Engineers, UK. Dave passed with distinction and won the Institute’s Wallace Premium (Senior) award in 1966 for the top commonwealth student.

While completing his study Dave worked as a draftsman, and from 1966 as a structural engineer, for JRG Hanlon. He became a partner in the consultancy in 1971. After Jack Hanlon’s death in 1975, Dave and the other junior partners continued the practice. Dave stayed with the company until his retirement in 1998. During his time with JRG Hanlon, Dave worked on the design for a wide range of prominent buildings and associated structures in Dunedin.

Dave served two years on the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand Dunedin Branch committee.

In retirement Dave completed a degree in Film and Media Studies from the University of Otago, graduating in 2004.
