Civil engineer and inventor, Bryan Bartley, is best known for his work with Jim MacDonald to develop the Barmac Crusher – a stone-crushing machine used to produce uniform sized aggregate for road construction.

Bryan studied Engineering at Auckland University College’s Ardmore campus. He then worked for two years in the City Engineer’s office for the Auckland City Council, before joining quarrying company, Winstone Ltd. in the role of Quarries Engineer. Bryan worked at Winstone Ltd. for nine years, then spent two years in Malaysia with Gammon Malaysia Ltd. On his return to New Zealand in 1963, Byran rejoined Winstone Ltd., for a further 22 years. Bryan served in senior leadership roles, and at the time of his retirement in 1985 held the position of General Manger, Winstone Central Engineering Services.

Bryan served on the IPENZ council and was also involved with Civic Trust, Auckland. In 2000, Bryan was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to engineering and the community.
