The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is inviting feedback on its proposed occupational regulation of engineers. This follows previous consultations in 2019 and 2014.

MBIE is proposing to establish a new regulator, overseen by an independent board that reports to a Minister of the Crown. MBIE is also proposing a two-tier system of regulation that includes:

  • registration of all engineers
  • a licensing regime to restrict practice in high-risk engineering disciplines.

Broadly, we think MBIE's proposals would benefit the public and the profession. But we're aware the proposals could significantly affect engineers and firms. And because we're a strong voice for engineers, we want to hear what this means for you.

MBIE’s consultation is open until Friday 25 June.
