Jake Togher – Managing your time and projects

Bio: Jake is a Structural Engineer at Mitchell Vranjes with more than five years’ experience working on a range of projects across the residential and commercial space. His areas of interest include project management and incorporating automation into structural engineering.

Presentation Overview: Jake will be sharing his experience as an emerging engineer, the lessons he’s learnt about managing time, projects and priorities to stay organised and delivering projects efficiently and successfully.

Blair Corbett – Why I love structural engineering

Bio: Blair is a Structural Engineer at Beca, with four years of experience. He has worked in a range of sectors, including the commercial, industrial, education, residential sectors as well as seismic assessments. His main interests include seismic assessments of existing structures.

Presentation Overview: Blair will be giving a short presentation on all things he loves about structural engineering. This will include aspects such as the technical and problem-solving side of the role, but also necessary soft skills in the form of client communication and project management to thrive in a deadline-driven working environment.

Ziqi Yang – Nonlinear Time-History Modelling in a Substation Detailed Seismic Assessment

Bio: Ziqi is a Structural Engineer at Bluebarn with nearly 5 years of experience in seismic assessment and strengthening projects across New Zealand. His work often involves advanced modelling and analysis techniques to support performance-based assessment.

Presentation Overview: Ziqi will present a Nonlinear Time-History (NLTH) analysis carried out as part of a recent Detailed Seismic Assessment of an IL3 substation. He will share the results of the elastic analysis, highlight its limitations, and demonstrate how the NLTH approach and consideration of soil–structure interaction provided a more accurate estimate of the building seismic response.

Mitchell Vranjes Structural Engineers Engineering New Zealand hello@engineeringnz.org

The Lightning Talks features our structural engineers in the Auckland chapter. Each engineer will have 5-10 minutes to give a brief presentation which can range from a particular project they're working on to tips and tricks they've learnt from their experience. This will be followed by an open Q&A and a chance to gain more insight into each presenter.Drinks and nibbles will be from 5.30-6pm with presentations/Q&A from 6pm.
