Using lessons learned from post-earthquake investigations and remediation activities as a platform to discuss future approaches to foundation design, the ongoing development of technical guidance, and emerging regulatory initiatives that will shape New Zealand's building industry.
The session will examine how the Canterbury recovery has influenced geotechnical engineering practice and residential foundation design across New Zealand.
The webinar will be presented by Kiran Saligame and Tony Kao, Senior Geotechnical Engineers within the Building Performance and Engineering team at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). Both presenters bring extensive expertise in geotechnical engineering, building performance, and natural hazard resilience.
Presenter Bios:
Kiran focuses on portfolio-level programme leadership, governance, and delivery across natural hazards, infrastructure resilience, regulatory advice, and technical guidance. His experience provides valuable insight into how engineering knowledge and evidence-based policy are informing the future direction of New Zealand's building regulatory system.
Tony will present on his role in providing sound geotechnical engineering advice to support work across MBIE in relation to the building regulatory system and its performance. Prior to joining MBIE, he worked in a consultancy environment to assist with Canterbury post-earthquake remediation.
