The presenters will discuss the background and rationale for the proposed revisions, key changes from the current edition of NZS 3404, and the implications for designers and the steel construction industry.

Topics covered will include:

  • material selection
  • seismic design,
  • and other key areas of the Standard.


There will be time for Q&A at the end. 

The session is intended to assist members in understanding the proposed changes and provide context to support their consideration of the draft Standard and participation in the Standards New Zealand public consultation process.

This is presented in collaboration by SESOC, SFPE and Steel Construction New Zealand (SCNZ)

Presenters - Alistair Fussell, Andrew Thompson and Professor Charles Clifton
Alistair is a consultant to Steel Construction New Zealand (SCNZ), having previously held the role of SCNZ Manager. He has extensive experience in structural steel design, fabrication and construction, and has been actively involved in the development of industry guidance, technical resources and standards relating to structural steelwork.

Andrew is a Technical Director with Holmes Group and has extensive experience in the design of steel structures, including seismic design. He has contributed to structural engineering guidance and has particular expertise in the behaviour and design of steel structures.

Charles Clifton is Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Auckland and is internationally recognised for his work in structural steel and composite construction. He has made significant contributions to the development of structural steel design standards in New Zealand and internationally, including previous editions and revisions of NZS 3404.

Kevin Cowie (SCNZ Technical Director and Chair of the NZS 3404 revision project) will host the webinar, introduce the presenters, provide context on the revision process and facilitate questions and discussion at the conclusion of the presentations.
