The presenters will discuss the background and rationale for the proposed revisions, key changes from the current edition of NZS 3404, and the implications for structural and fire engineers, designers, and the steel construction industry. Topics covered will include the revised approach to structural fire design, fire resistance requirements, design methods and other key changes relevant to the fire performance of steel structures.
The session is intended to assist members in understanding the proposed fire-related changes, the technical basis behind the revisions, and their potential implications for engineering practice. It will also provide context to support consideration of the draft Standard and participation in the Standards New Zealand public consultation process.
There will be time for Q&A at the end.
Presenter Bios
Professor Charles Clifton
Charles is Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Auckland and is internationally recognised for his work in structural steel and composite construction. He has made significant contributions to the development of structural steel design standards in New Zealand and internationally, including previous editions and revisions of NZS 3404.
Anthony Abu
Anthony Abu is Associate Professor of Structures and Fire Engineering at the University of Canterbury, with expertise spanning structural engineering, fire engineering, timber engineering, computational modelling, and professional practice. He has contributed to the development of New Zealand and Australian structural design standards, including NZS 3404 and AS/NZS 2327, with particular involvement in provisions relating to structural fire design.
This webinar will provide an overview of the proposed fire engineering revisions included in the draft revision of NZS 3404, with a focus on the changes relating to the fire design and performance of structural steelwork.
