The site visit will be led by BCD Group and Foster Construction, providing attendees with the opportunity to hear directly from the engineers and construction team involved in the project and see the developing structure firsthand.

The New Zealand Graduate School of Medicine is being developed to provide a dedicated four-year graduate-entry medical programme, with a particular focus on training doctors to support rural and regional communities across New Zealand. The school is scheduled to open in 2028, with an initial intake of approximately 120 graduate students.

The new facility will provide purpose-built spaces to support teaching, learning, collaboration, and medical education as the programme grows.

The building comprises four storeys, with an internal floor area of approximately 1,400 m² per suspended level.

The primary structural system consists of:

  • A steel-framed structure with ComFlor composite floor systems.

  • Composite steel beams supporting the floor structure.

  • Concrete-filled composite columns providing vertical support.

  • Perimeter eccentric braced frames (EBFs) providing lateral stability.

  • Central reinforced concrete core walls providing additional lateral resistance and stability.

  • A shallow concrete raft foundation supporting the building.

The project provides an interesting example of the integration of steel and composite construction within a relatively compact, multi-storey educational facility, with the structural system designed to efficiently accommodate the building's architectural and functional requirements.

Join us for an opportunity to hear about the structural design and construction of this project. The presentation and site visit will be lead by structural engineer Clark Taylor from BCD Group, and contractor Blanton Benjamin from Foster Construction.
