We have organised a site visit to the solar farm where Infratec project manager, Iain Malloy, will provide us an overview of the project and a chance to look at some of the key infrastructure of the solar farm.
If you have time would also suggest stopping by the Mātairangi (look-out) at the Airport to enjoy some elevated panoramic views of Taranaki.
PPE requirements will be advised separately to those that register.
THE PROJECT:
New Plymouth Airport has completed Te Matakupenga, a 10MW solar farm designed to make the airport energy self-sufficient and support Taranaki’s transition to renewable energy. Spanning 15 hectares of NPDC owned land, the installation comprises 14,400 photovoltaic panels, generating up to 14,700 MWh annually, enough to power approximately 2,000 homes. The project is expected to cut 1,500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year and includes a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to enable 24/7 renewable energy use for the terminal and on-site operations.
Commissioned in September 2025, the solar farm integrates with a private electricity network and supports EV charging infrastructure, including 40 chargers for rental fleets and future public rapid-charging stations. Excess electricity is sold to NPDC under a five-year agreement, supplying about 6.2 GWh annually and reducing council emissions by 10%. The initiative aligns with national decarbonisation goals and demonstrates adaptive technologies for future electrification in aviation and ground transport.
Delivered by Papa Rererangi i Puketapu Ltd, Infratec, and New Energy, the project showcases innovative engineering, resilience against grid volatility, and community partnership with Puketapu Hapū. It represents a significant step toward sustainable airport operations and regional energy independence.
Join us for an exclusive site visit to Te Matakupenga, the newly commissioned 10MW solar farm at New Plymouth Airport (NPAC).
