From the start of Whitebait season (September) until early February, the population of the Mokihinui Camping ground increases from about 5 to over 100.  This puts a large strain on the wastewater system, which has resulted in smells and wet patches around the disposal areas because of the high groundwater (tidally influenced with a peak about 1.2m below the surface).

Buller District Council wished to install a more resilient system to better cater for the fluctuating loads and to comply with the best current practice.  Larger septic tanks are being installed discharging to a raised AES bed to provide separation between the effluent and the groundwater.  The septic tanks will be installed into the groundwater, so well pointing is being used to lower the water table at the pump’s location.
