The Northland Regional Council's “Kaeo Phase 2 Flood Mitigation Project” is delivering significant flood risk reduction for the Kaeo township while uncovering a remarkable story of human occupation in the valley spanning hundreds of years.
The project includes the construction of a new stream channel designed to relocate the confluence approximately 500 meters downstream, modelling indicates this work results in reducing flood levels within Kaeo Township by approximately 300 mm during major flood events.
During excavation works, more than 300 artefacts have been discovered, providing fascinating insights into both Māori and European settlement of the valley. The excavations in the upper layers are uncovering European artifacts; the middle layers we see a mix of European and Māori and in the lower deposits we are finding only Māori artifacts some dating back approximately 500 years.
This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from the engineers, cultural representatives, and archaeologists involved in a project that is simultaneously reducing flood risk and uncovering Northland's rich history.
