Did you know that Te Rapa is one of Fonterra's largest manufacturing sites? The facility spans 41 hectares, has a peak processing capacity of 1,000 tonnes of milk per day, and employs more than 500 people. This visit offers a unique opportunity to see the scale and complexity of one of New Zealand's leading food manufacturing operations.
The visit will begin with a presentation providing an overview of the Te Rapa site, its history, and its role within Fonterra's manufacturing network. Attendees will then take part in a guided tour through the site's Cream Plant, Powders Plant, and Depot operations, gaining insight into the production processes and logistics that support the manufacture and distribution of dairy products.
Along the way, participants will learn about the challenges associated with large-scale food processing, including safety, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement. The tour provides an excellent opportunity for engineers, technologists, students, and industry professionals to see engineering in action and gain a greater appreciation of the systems and people behind New Zealand's dairy industry.
Following the tour, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and network with fellow Engineering New Zealand and NZIFST members.
