ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Jason Donaghy (Northland Regional Council)

Jason will present on some of the extreme rain events Northland experienced recently. Localised extreme rainfall events during Cyclone Gabrielle around the Mangawhai area, and in January of 2026 along the east coast centred in the Ōakura – Punaruku – Whangaruru area, will be part of the presentation. Many times, these localised high-intensity storms miss the region's rain gauges; however, calibrated rain radar gives us additional data, and we can start to build a more comprehensive understanding of extreme rain events.

Matt de Boer (Adapterra Ltd)

Matt will present the latest flood modelling for the Whangārei catchment and how this is being used to help develop strategic approaches for managing the risks of compound flooding in the CBD. He will discuss the interactions between pluvial, fluvial and coastal flooding, and how these change over time with increasing sea levels and rainfall intensity. Matt is the project manager and technical lead for the Whangārei Urban Flood Strategy – a joint venture between Whangārei District Council and Northland Regional Council studying the flood risk to Whangārei and developing an adaptive, long-term flood risk management strategy.
