The National Railway Museum is celebrating a landmark year of its 50th birthday, in tandem with the 200th anniversary of the modern railway, with exhibitions, events and a grand reopening.

Station Hall, closed to the public since 2023, will reopen at the York museum in September after the completion of a £10.5m refurbishment project. Visitors will be able to rediscover the grandeur of the historic exhibition space in time for a special birthday weekend on 27 - 28 September, marking five decades since the museum opened in 1975.

The former goods station and Grade II listed building represents around a third of the museum's exhibition space. It will reopen in September with refreshed interior decoration and stunning new collection items, alongside timeless returning favourites such as the royal carriages. The building has also received a brand-new roof, fitted with energy-efficient solar panels.

Programme - Saturday 27th September:
1:45 pm : Gather at the museum entrance.
2:00 pm : Enter the museum.
5:00 pm : Museum closes.
5:30 pm : Social gathering for drinks followed by an informal dinner for anyone who would like to attend. Each person will be responsible for their own drinks and meal costs.

We will select a venue for the social gathering closer to the date. It will be a reasonably priced establishment, such as a pub, and within easy walking distance of the museum and York railway station.

Entry to the museum is free but pre‑booking tickets is recommended and we would like to make a group booking, particularly as this is likely to be a very popular weekend for visiting the museum.
