The Whangārei District Council is installing a new pump station and an extended stormwater pipe network in Morningside to reduce flooding. Flooding on Kaka Street in the Morningside area is having an impact on businesses, residents and the community. At times, the flooding enters homes, cars and buildings, causing disruption and damage to roads.
Join us on a walkover of the site, followed by a presentation at Dickens Inn Whangārei. Please arrive before 5:00pm for a site induction. Steel cap shoes, high-vis and hardhats are required.
4:45 – 5:00pm – All attendees arrive at the end of Rawhiti Street for a site induction.
5:00pm – Site walkover.
5:45 – 6:00pm – All attendees travel to Dickens Inn Whangārei.
6:00pm – Presentation of project design at Dickens Inn.
Please note: Optional dinner at own cost.
THE PROJECT
STAGE 1 – January to July 2025
The first stage includes:
• Increased water storage in Rawhiti stream at the end of Rawhiti Street.
• Installation of a new pump station to move water to Limeburners Channel faster.
• Flood walls erected to help maximise channel capacity and speed up the flow of water.
• A new precast concrete structure to house the pump station and act as the new walkway bridge and flood wall.
STAGE 2 – May to October 2025
Stage 2 sees the installation of a new system of pipework. This will collect stormwater runoff from the upper Morningside area and convey it directly into Limeburners Channel below the new pump station. By constructing the interceptor, stormwater can be diverted away from low-lying properties around Morningside Sports Park and Kaka Street, reducing the volume of water that would otherwise accumulate.
This stage involves installation of two lines of stormwater pipes from the end of Rawhiti Street. One will cross the Whangārei Pipe Band Society carpark and Morningside Sports Park to Morningside Road and along towards Morningside School. The other will be laid along Rawhiti Street to the intersection at Jellicoe Street, and underneath private properties to Morningside Road.
PPE Required: Steel cap shoes, high-vis and hardhats.
Join the Northland Branch and Young Engineers for a visit and presentation to the Morningside Flood Relief site!
