ABOUT PŪHORO STEMM ACADEMY

Pūhoro STEMM is a leading non-profit dedicated to empowering Māori rangatahi (youth) into science, technology, engineering, maths and Mātauranga Māori (Māori sciences). Mātauranga Māori is incorporated through the concepts of tuakiri (identity) and pūrākau (storytelling), encouraging rangatahi to explore their heritage while tackling STEMM challenges.

Launched in 2016, Pūhoro was developed in response to national low engagement of Māori in STEM-related career pathways that subsequently leads to lower numbers of Māori representation in science and technology industries in Aotearoa.  Pūhoro seeks to change this space and recognises that a STEMM workforce is required for an innovation-focused future society.

Through their work in high schools, universities, and industries, Pūhoro has helped many young Māori enter the STEM profession in New Zealand and beyond. Pūhoro's CE Kemp Reweti will present on their incredible mahi (work), the impact of increasing Māori engagement in science and engineering and how industry can further the initiative.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Kemp Reweti is the Manahautū (Chief Executive) of Pūhoro STEMM Academy, where he leads efforts to create pathways for Māori students in science, technology, engineering, maths, and Mātauranga Māori. Since joining Pūhoro in 2018, Kemp has been pivotal in expanding the organisation’s reach and impact through strong partnerships and a focus on stakeholder engagement. Recognised as a passionate advocate for Māori advancement in STEMM fields, Kemp is committed to supporting rangatahi and their whānau into future-focused careers.
