If engineers are to design for a sustainable and resilient future, at what point does their own education about these things need to start? Is it at school or maybe later in the degree, or maybe in the world of work? What frames of reference do they need to learn about? Could the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals be suitable as a framework, or do we need a deeper understanding of other more specific risks and issues. Offsetting carbon emissions is often seen as a solution, but it needs to be done ethically to avoid accusations of greenwashing. Other engineering solutions may only be shorter term and may prove eventually to have a more detrimental effect on the planet than simply reducing our total emissions.
These and other topics will be addressed in the talk.
Keynote speaker: Prof. Jan Evans-Freeman
Panel discussion: Jan Evans-Freeman, Jo Horrocks, Ross Roberts, Nick Wharmby
Chair: Ann Wiliams
