The Engineering a Safer Future Symposium celebrates and explores the essential contribution of engineering to safety across industries and disciplines. This full-day event brings together engineers, researchers, industry practitioners, and safety leaders to share groundbreaking ideas, real-world case studies, and transformative research that prioritises safety from the ground up.

Through a programme of expert presentations, interactive workshops, and discussion, attendees will gain insights into how engineering is driving solutions to today’s most urgent safety challenges.

The symposium will feature:

  • Jon Harper-Slade on Energy-Based Safety: A Scientific Method for Enhancing Hazard Recognition and Preventing Serious Injuries.
  • Rob Holland and Nicky Turnbull presenting a case study on how Health & Safety by Design workshops are achieving industry-wide change.
  • Kongting Lee on Organisational Drivers for Safer Manufacturing Workplaces.
  • Ashok Kandel discussing Welding Fumes and Their Impacts.
  • Dirk Pons leading a practical Bowtie Analysis workshop showcasing this powerful risk assessment tool.
  • Tony Catterson on Guarding for the Future: Innovations and Updates in Machinery Safety Standards.
  • Phil Bruneau presenting an Analytical Framework for Future Resource Adequacy: Assessing the Risk of Rolling Blackouts in New Zealand.
  • Joe Bain on Engineering Safety in New Zealand – Emerging Trends and the Future Outlook.

The day runs from 9.00am to 3.45pm, followed by a casual networking event from 4.30pm. Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea will be provided, with a student poster exhibit and judging session included.
