Get an up-close look at the impressive engineering supporting the renewal of the Robert McDougall Gallery!

We invite you to a unique site tour of the Canterbury Museum redevelopment, hosted by Didier Pettinga, Technical Director at Holmes NZ. The redevelopment involves strengthening and base-isolating the 1930s Robert McDougall Gallery and construction of a new base-isolated basement beneath the heritage structure.

During the visit you will walk through an active construction site (where safe and feasible), view the extensive temporary structure currently supporting the gallery, and witness how heritage and seismic resilience are being reconciled. There’ll be commentary on the challenges of working beneath live structures, waterproofing deep basements in saturated ground, and integrating new construction with existing fabric.

This site visit includes expert narration and Q&A with Didier, followed by networking over light refreshments.
