The Theatre Royal, a Heritage New Zealand Category 2 Historic Place, is being strengthened to a minimum of 70% NBS (IL3) while retaining and restoring its important heritage features. The works also include upgrades to theatre systems, accessibility, building services, front-of-house and back-of-house facilities.
Alongside the theatre, the new museum will provide modern exhibition, education, collection and staff spaces, with specialist environmental, acoustic and security requirements incorporated into the design.
The project is being delivered under a particularly tight programme, with early civil works progressing while detailed design and procurement were still underway. Hawkins New Zealand mobilised to site in January 2026, with the main construction works programmed for completion by the end of 2026 and specialist fit-out continuing into early 2027.
The presentation will be delivered by Paul Haggath, Partner and Project Director at TEAM Projects Advisory, who will provide an overview of the project and share insights into its design, procurement, seismic, heritage and construction challenges.
Light lunch will be provided at the venue.
Following the presentation, attendees will be divided into two groups. Group 1 will have lunch while Group 2 undertakes a guided site visit, after which the groups will switch.
This is a great opportunity to hear directly from the project team and see how a complex heritage, engineering and new-build project is being delivered in the heart of Timaru.
PPE required: Hi-vis vest, safety boots and hard hat. Attendees must bring their own PPE.
