The Services Engineer takes the building and the spaces it represents and turns them into pleasant and comfortable places for work and living.
In a building project you're dealing with conflicting roles:
- The architects want the spaces to be pleasant and comfortable too, but do not want to see equipment nor give up space for it.
- Structural engineers want buildings that will stand up no matter what nature might throw at them.
- Services engineers want to dot plant and equipment (apparently) willy-nilly within and without the building, poking lots of holes in it as they go.
Each is trying to produce the best possible solution, but the best possible solution for a building owner or user is that which represents the best possible compromise between these (often) conflicting needs of the architect, structural, and services engineer.
The services engineer is often overlooked because if they have been successful, no-one really notices their existence. People are not too hot, not too cold, water of the right temperature arrives on demand, lights work, lifts go up and down. All perfectly normal stuff, but this does not happen by accident.
