We recognise experience gained after completing an engineering or engineering geology qualification.

Your engineering experience can include:

  • Employment in an engineering, engineering geology or engineering academic role
  • Volunteering in an engineering or engineering geology role
  • Postgraduate study in engineering or engineering geology

Not all paths to an engineering career are the same. If you worked as an engineer before studying engineering, this is recognised too.

How experience is counted

When joining as an Emerging Professional

Add up the years and months of experience you’ve gained as an engineer. You’ll need to tell us how much experience you have when you apply to join.

When upgrading from Student Membership

We’ll automatically upgrade you – free – to Emerging Professional Membership when you’ve completed your qualification. Your experience is counted from the date you become an Emerging Professional Member.

Discounted fees based on your experience

We’re here to support you as you start out in your career. One of the ways we do this is by providing a 50% discount on your annual membership fee for your first three years of experience.

The discount is applied when your membership is renewed in October each year, or when applying to join as an Emerging Professional Member.

Upgrading to Member based on your experience

When you’ve completed an Emerging Professional development programme, you’re eligible to fast-track to Member.

When you reach 5 years’ experience, we’ll automatically upgrade you to Member.
