Following the end of member discounts for New Zealand Standards, Engineering New Zealand has secured specialist bundles from Standards NZ. This has happened on the back of extensive member feedback and our advocacy efforts to shift what is happening in the standards space.

New bundle options available

Standards NZ has released targeted bundles for the following engineering disciplines:

  • Heavy Vehicle Engineers – covering commercial vehicle design and compliance standards
  • Structural Engineers – including key building and construction standards
  • HVAC Engineers – encompassing heating, ventilation and air conditioning standards
  • Building Envelope Specialists – covering weatherproofing and envelope performance standards

These bundles represent a direct response to member concerns about individual standard pricing following the discount removal. You can find these bundles online here.

Broader system challenges remain

Although these bundles are a welcome step, we know the standards system still faces critical issues. The user-pays funding model is unsustainable and creates barriers for those that rely on standards, and a recent price increase will further restrict access.

In addition to this, many of our standards are outdated and there is a disconnect between New Zealand and the rest of the world, with New Zealand lagging behind global practice in standards adoption.

By contrast, Australia's construction industry and Standards Australia are advocating for completely free access to Australian Standards, recognising that paywall restrictions negatively impact compliance and productivity.

That’s why Engineering New Zealand will continue to advocate for fundamental reform of New Zealand's standards system. We will continue working with Standards NZ and Government to address these systemic issues whilst securing immediate improvements for members.

Seeking your feedback on the new bundles

We're seeking member feedback on:

  • Bundle effectiveness – do the current bundles meet your professional requirements?
  • Coverage gaps – what additional engineering disciplines need bundle options?
  • Pricing concerns – how do bundle prices compare to your previous costs?
  • System improvements – what changes would most benefit your practice?

Please share your experience with the new bundles and suggestions for improvements. To have your say, contact us at hello@engineeringnz.org or through the member portal feedback system.
