Join us for a guided tour of the major $60M upgrade underway at Rotorua’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.

This significant redevelopment will significantly improve the removal of nutrients to meet more exacting consent limits, remove E-Coli and pathogens using a ‘double barrier’ treatment system, provide full containment of flows, and increase the capacity to meet future growth. Construction has been progressing rapidly, with most new concrete structures complete and mechanical and electrical installations well advanced.

The event will include a discussion with the team involved in the project and a walkover of the WWTP, followed by drinks and nibbles at the Good Eastern Taphouse.

PPE Required: Clothing to cover arms and legs, hard hat, hi-vis vest, safety boots and safety glasses.

What you’ll see:

  • New inlet screening provisions to improve the removal of grit, wet-wipes and other unwanted items in the wastewater.
  • Upgraded Bardenpho nutrient‑removal system and new process infrastructure.
  • New ‘state-of-the-art’ membrane bio-reactor technology.
  • Industrial UV treatment systems.
  • Large‑scale pipeline installations (up to 1 m diameter) and major civil works.
  • Insight into staging works while keeping the current plant operational.

Discussion highlights:

  • Managing consent requirements for the protection of nearby geothermal features.
  • Working with contaminated soils.
  • Design and construction of a WasteMINZ Class 3 Containment Cell for storage of contaminated material.
  • Planning and execution of cut-ins between existing and new plant.
  • Management of high influent risks during storm events.

A great opportunity to see major wastewater infrastructure upgrade up close, hear from the engineers delivering it, and learn about the unique technical, environmental and geothermal considerations of construction in Rotorua.
