Note this course was previously called Effective site visits, meetings and inspections.

As construction activity intensifies in New Zealand, there is growing demand for engineers and project managers who can manage and monitor construction sites on behalf of their clients.

Traditional training tends to emphasise the technical and contractual aspects of site work, with far less attention paid to the personal and situational skills needed for successful outcomes.

This course is designed to bridge that gap. It focuses on the practical judgement, awareness, and interpersonal capability required on site, giving participants a strong foundation in recognising potential pitfalls and managing challenging situations effectively.

Learning outcomes

by the end of this course, participants will:

  • Understand how an organisation’s expectations and risks can be influenced and managed by how their professionals behave and interact on site.
  • Understand the different roles, responsibilities and risks of engineers and project managers engaged on site work.
  • Have a greater understanding of MSQA, site observation, supervision and engineering inspections.
  • Achieve better outcomes on site through combining the knowledge and techniques gained in the course with the participant’s existing technical skills.
  • Develop a personal toolbox for dealing confidently with difficult situations and problems on site.

Intended audience

This course is targeted at client and consulting engineers and project managers with up to 5 years of experience who wish to become more effective and confident in their interactions during site visits and meetings. This course is also suited to those newly arrived in New Zealand from other jurisdictions.

Course Format

This course is delivered in-person or live online and includes a presentation, case studies and group exercises.

Participants will be provided with a workbook to guide reflection and discussion during the course.
