Join us for a special New Zealand Coastal Society Auckland regional event featuring two leading coastal researchers from Chile, Patricio Catalán and Patricio Winckler, visiting New Zealand as part of a wider collaboration on coastal hazards, resilience, and adaptation with OCEANUM.
This event will be a great opportunity to hear from internationally recognised experts working at the intersection of tsunami science, coastal engineering, and future-oriented coastal design. Their work connects fundamental research with real-world applications in hazard assessment, warning systems, and coastal adaptation in highly dynamic environments.
Networking from 5pm, with presentations starting at 5.30pm sharp.
The evening will include two guest talks:
Patricio Catalán - Novel approaches for probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis.
Patricio Winckler - Waves of the future. From the design of traditional breakwaters to nature-based solutions.
Presenter Bios:
Patricio Catalán, PhD, is a Professor at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Chile, and principal investigator at CIGIDEN and CCTVal. An expert in ocean engineering, his research focuses on tsunami hydrodynamics and nearshore wave breaking using remote sensing. He led the development of Chile’s Tsunami Warning System and serves on the ASCE Coastal Engineering Research Council.
Patricio Winckler, PhD, is a Professor at the Ocean Engineering School at Universidad de Valparaíso, Chile, and principal investigator at CIGIDEN and COSTAR. As an expert in coastal engineering, he focuses on climate-driven hazards, tsunamis and coastal adaptation in tectonically-active coasts.
This regional event is intended as an informal professional gathering for the coastal engineering community, with time for discussion and networking after the presentations.
Join us for an in-person New Zealand Coastal Society regional get-together, featuring some great international speakers!
