The Mōkōpeka Hydroelectric Station is a hidden gem tucked away in the hills of Hawke's Bay, and a source of real regional pride – believed to be one of the oldest continually operating hydroelectric stations in the world and a remarkable piece of Hawke's Bay engineering heritage. Each year, Engineering New Zealand's Hawke's Bay Branch organises a working bee to help maintain and care for the station grounds, and we'd love you to join us for this year's event.
The day involves general maintenance and tidying of the station and its surrounds – no specialist skills required, just a willingness to get stuck in.
- Bring along any household gardening gear you have handy, such as gloves, weed trimmers, garden shears or secateurs.
- Meet at the intersection of Te Mata Road and Te Mata Mangatere Road at 10am, where we'll head out to the station together in convoy.
- The working bee wraps up around 2pm, with lunch and drinks provided to round out a rewarding day.
Whether you're a seasoned branch member or new to Engineering New Zealand, this is a fantastic way to connect with fellow engineers in a relaxed, outdoor setting – all while helping preserve an extraordinary piece of living engineering history. We hope to see you there!
