Following a series of significant storm events in 2017 and 2018 the previous embankments providing the main accessway between Papamoa Beach Road and the Harrisons Cut carpark and boat ramp was decimated leaving the accessway compromised for the public.
This asset includes a significant overland flow outfall from the Papamoa catchment to the sea and Tauranga City Council was concerned following the storm events that both public amenity and stormwater catchment designs would be compromised in future significant storm events.
Redevelopment needed to consider the ecological and cultural significance of the area as part of the design, being a protected coastal dune sequence with native flora and fauna in a highly dynamic coastal environment with interests including the local mana whenua Ngā Pōtiki.
The project won several awards including the 2023 Stormwater Solutions Top Project. It was also one of the earlier projects to use the large modular block system Redi-rock in New Zealand, a US system being fabricated by Duracrete for the New Zealand market.
The event will include a walkover of the structure now in place, a discussion with the project team involved in the design and construction of the project followed by shared fish and chips down at the beach in the sun.
The event is proudly sponsored by Duracrete and Redirock. This is likely to be the last local branch event for the year so get involved and catch up for some end of year networking over hot chips and T sauce!
This event is free for Engineering New Zealand members, and $10 for non-members.
Parking information: Limited parking is available at the end of Harrisons Cut by the beach and boat ramp. Most people attending should consider parking on the grass verge on the seaward side of Papamoa Beach Road and nearby residential streets of Hartford Avenue and Bermuda Drive for the event. Further car parking areas facilities are available a short walk away at the Domain and near Hartford Avenue.
The Bay of Plenty Branch invites local engineers to walk the Harrisons Cut followed by fish and chips on the beach and a talk from the engineers involved in the project (Jodie Hurley) and David Hepburn from Duracrete/Redi-rock.
